More pictures from drydock:

Please note the varying quality of previous repairs.  I hope that the original hull construction can be restored.

One of the pics made me wonder what a certain part would be for:

It's about the square box around the tube for the propshaft.
Is that something for keeping the oil in or what is it for?
Greetings Josse

I would think that maybe there was a leak at that point and the best/ cheapest way of fixing was to put the box around that area and weld it up good.

I tend to concur.  My opinion is the shaft penetration cover was measured up, cut in a shop, fabbed partway, then welded in place underwater.  It did not need to be smooth to cut drag.  Also note the bow, portside.  I really hope they replace that repair with proper sections matching the original hull.
So, who wants to visit once she is back at Patriot's Point?  I presume no one is building a model of her at this time.
Has anyone figured out what happened to the props?

The Box that you see attached to the stern tube is a closure that they use on inactivated ships, usually they will have these over all of the various seachest.
It is interesting to note that only the port shaft has this closure.

I have seen these before on an old Fletcher class that was being scrapped at National Metals on Terminal Island back in the early 80's.

The chance of them replacing the portion of the shell plating forward on the port side is somewhat less then zero. Unless it is very carroded.

You can also see that at some time in the past there were doubler plates welded to her port side forward along her waterline. I also noticed that they did not install these plates on the starboard side.

Okay folks, here is the latest installment on the "Ship That Would Not Die"

http://www.laffey.org/dry_dock_photos_september_10.htm

It's amazing to see the framing.  I have a better understanding of how they could build these quickly for the War.  The ghosts of Rosie the Riveter and Wendy the Welder live!  I'm really proud of the organizations that donated money to make this happen.  God Bless America, the greatest nation on Earth!

Sincerely,

Looks like Alan beat me to it this time.  From the pictures it is clear she is getting an ENTIRE new hull below the waterline.  The remediation will also make it more likely that additional spaces can be opened to visitors.  By the way, it looks like she had an SQS-23 Sonar dome.  Anybody know for sure?

I wish i had such an income to restore such a ship to battle readiness, even though im not american i do feel that ships and so forth that have done their duty well and proven themselves time and time again deserve to be maintained, as said before this ship survived what 5 6 wars? Definately deserves these repairs.

I had the oppertunity to visit the Laffey in Drydock yesterday, man she was in bad shape, but the work beig accomplished is extroidenary

The Laffey is indeed having almost all of her shell plating from the waterline down replaced with thicker plating, except where the plating was aready 25# plate. She will last many more decadesnow.
