James Tarro sent in this photo of a cage mast he built.  He writes:

"Here is a photo of a 1/96 scale cage mast for the USS Texas (as built). I have since taken this item apart and rebuilt it  For those that might be interested, the tubes are 1/32 brass rod, which is exact scale to 3 inches. The rings are .020"

Here is the third iteration of the mast that James Tarro is building for his USS Texas (BB-35) 1914 - it just keeps getting better and better!

I though I would post how I build cage masts.
This is for the USS Tennessee being built by Jim H .

Step 1
Build a template to hold the wires arrayed in a circle top and bottom.

Step 2
Place a wire in the base then place the end of the wire in the top template 90 degrees to the right.
Place a wire in the base then place the end of the wire in the top template 90 degrees to the left.
Repeat on the opposite side.
This is what it should look like.

Step 3
Next, start placing wires in the base going counterclockwise.
Place the end of the wire in the top template in sequence until you have filled every spot.
If you didn’t miss any you should run out of holes top and bottom and the same time.

Step 4
Next, start placing wires in the base going clockwise.
Place the end of the wire in the top template in sequence until you have filled every spot.
If you didn’t miss any you should run out of holes top and bottom and the same time.

I will need to get the ties done and will post that next.

one word....Amazing! and seemingly simple to do (though I wouldn't take any bets on that!)
Foo
How long did it take you figure that out or did you find a pic of some jig that they used to build them full scale?

OK
So how many holes did you drill and how far apart are they?
Second how big in Dia. are the holes and what is the Dia. of the brass wire? Little things that we need to know. Yeah it looks great too.

I got most of the details from the old Scale Ship Modeler magazine and P.C. Cokers book.

I use .032 dia brass rod.
I have used .020 but it doesn't hold its shape well.
The .032 is a bit oversized but it is the smallest dia I have tried that works well.

The holes are 1/16” dia. About a 1/8” deep
Don't drill them too deep. It will mess with the angle that the rod wants to be at.
The important part is that the rods need to have no interference on them.
They need to self align or it will mess up the symmetry.

I have 36 holes arrayed in 360 degrees, which makes it 10 degrees between holes.
The base and top diameter is set by the ships drawings.
For this one I have a 3" base and a 1 1/4" top.
The spacing for the base is about 1/4; the top is about a 1/8".

On the inside of these holes on the jig are the alignment holes for the forward mast.
The base for that one is about a 1 3/8" and the top stays at 1 1/4"
The spacing becomes: base- 1/8” top- 1/8"

Setting up the jig is really the only difficult part.
Everything to this point took only 30 min to put together and solder up.

A couple of ways to get the spacing:
Get someone that has a mill with a rotary table and degree wheel to drill it.
Get a drawing program that will array lines in a diameter and copy it to a base.
It doesn’t need to be very accurate as long as its close

Then use the base to make the top template as it stays with the cage mast, and you need to make a new one with each new mast.

These things are not as fragile as they look.
The act just like the real ones and those support a lot of weight.
The one on Kevin’s West Virginia got mauled by Mikes carrier and its still on the model.

With the diagrams and measurements (thanks James) I set up a Coreldraw drawing in about 30 seconds that can be laser etched onto the material showing the x, and y lines, and the hole centers.

If anyone wants one engraved - send me the blank material plus return postage & I'll engrave it for you. I even have the blue layout fluid or if you want a permanent black marking I can do that to.
Aluminum to stainless is no problem.  Wink

PM me for shipping info if interested.

Steve Owen

BTW we also have a sherline mill plus rotary table and about 36 million drill bits but now we're talking money.  Tongue

The brass tube that is in the center does that come out later in the building of the mast?

Here a few more photos of the cage mast.
I have got some of the ties soldered on and it’s been taken off the jig.
The center support post stays with the jig.
The top ring is still loose; It gets soldered when I determine the correct height of the mast.

One with some paint.
This thing needs to be bead blasted to clean up the solder joints and painted with some lighter paint.
